Glacier & Yellowstone 2013

 

Day 1, 24 August 2013 - 610 day miles, 610 trip miles

Departure

My plan is to make a loop to and from Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks.  I could take the direct Interstate route there, but I’ve decided to take a more westerly route for more scenic driving!

Day 2, 25 August 2013 - 364 day miles, 974 trip miles

Northern New Mexico Scenic Drive

Fewer miles, longer day, from Raton, west to Cimarron and Taos, over the gorge of the Rio Grande, over at 10,000 foot pass, and into Farmington.

Day 3, 26 August 2013 - 336 day miles, 1310 trip miles

Puebloan Ruins and Monument Valley

A visit to a couple pueblo ruins - Salmon Ruins, and Aztec Ruins National Monument.  I then drove out west past Shiprock , to Kayenta, Arizona, to drive north through Monument Valley.

Day 4, 27 August 2013 - 530 day miles, 1840 trip miles

Moab to Ketchum

The ultimate goal for this road trip are visits to Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, in that order.  So today focused on making into Idaho.

Day 5, 28 August 2013 - 490 day miles, 2330 trip miles

490 Mile Nordschleife

A visit to a couple pueblo ruins - Salmon Ruins, and Aztec Ruins National Monument.  I then drove out west past Shiprock , to Kayenta, Arizona, to drive north through Monument Valley.

Arrival at Glacier National Park

Sounds of the forest / flickers sing, water babbles / Forest calls me in

Avalanche Lake and Going The The Sun Road

In the morning I made a day hike to Avalanche Lake, an incredible glacier-fed lake.  In the afternoon I drove the “Going To The Sun” Road, a spectacular scenic drive across the park.

Hidden Lake

In my third day in Glacier National Park, I hiked to the Hidden Lake from the Logan Pass visitor center

Day 9, 1 September 2013 - 278 day miles, 3357 trip miles

Arrival At Yellowstone

I drove to Gardiner, MT, just outside the northern entranced to Yellowstone National Park.

Day 10, 2 September 2013 - 88 day miles, 3445 trip miles

Yellowstone National Park

An introductory day to the park, driving around the northern loop of the park.  It rained most of the day, so no hiking around.

Day 11, 3 September 2013 - 161 day miles, 3608 trip miles

Great Prismatic Spring

Today I visited one of it not the most spectacular springs in the park, Great Prismatic Spring.

Day 12, 4 September 2013 - 183 day miles, 3789 trip miles

Morning Glory Pool

This is my last full day in Yellowstone National Park.  A long day, too.  I made a full clockwise circuit of the park, visiting the thermal features around Old Faithful, and back again.  Today, I saw the BEST sight in the park, the Morning Glory pool.

Beartooth Highway

I left Yellowstone National Park, and headed back home by way of the Beartooth Highway, which is perhaps the most scenic drive I have ever experienced in the United States

Heading Home

A making-time day, heading home
